Poverty And Riches

Give Want her welcome if she comes; we find
Riches to be but burdens to the mind.

God could have made all rich, or all men poor;
But why He did not, let me tell wherefore:
Had all been rich, where then had patience been?
Had all been poor, who had His bounty seen?

Goes the world now, it will with thee go hard:
The fattest hogs we grease the more with lard.
To him that has, there shall be added more;
Who is penurious, he shall still be poor.

Love is maintain'd by wealth; when all is spent,
Adversity then breeds the discontent.

To mortal men great loads allotted be,
But of all packs, no pack like poverty.

Though hourly comforts from the gods we see,
No life is yet life-proof from misery.
